 Lookout for the leading man

On April 22nd, C P Ramaswami Foundation celebrated Earth Day by releasing Tulika’s Birdywood Buzz, a picture book by Shamim Padmasee. A bird lover, Shamim sets her story amidst twittering, preening, grovelling, high-flying avians, for
a funny take on filmy business. And through it, cleverly turns the spotlight on the endangered vulture.

P C Ramakrishna, Chennai’s favourite theatre person read aloud from the story in English
and Tamil. While his baritone was capturing the drama and mischievous humour just right, Ashok Rajagopalan, the book’s illustrator, added a crest here, a tail there, a dab of red on
a cheek and a hint of yellow on a wing, to show how the birds got their ‘look’! Children from SOS Children’s Village, Tambaram, got a feel of the feverish activity around how and why
a bald bird gets to be the leading man of Mor Khan’s superhit-in-the-making! Vaishnavi,
a student, received the first copy of the book from P C Ramakrishna.

 Czech Stop

After the Vesuvian Giant, came Grendel and then the Budapest Changeling. Staying on the European trail, this summer,
Aditi and her Friends in search of Shemeek
takes you to the Czech Republic to meet Shemeek, a snow white horse, who sleeps behind a rock, dreaming of the world. Aditi and friends need Shemeek’s help to rid Monkeyji of a spell cast on her.
The eighth book in the series, it melds action, adventure and a popular legend, and subtly asks a few questions. . . Who finally wins? Can a problem be a solution?

Two new bilingual books. . . coming soon

The first book is about a delicious dream going horribly wrong – almost! The second features
a hungry father and dosas that disappear from right under his nose.

A small-big project

Tulika received this letter from a well-wisher:
“My friends and I have raised enough money, once again, to create three new
school libraries. I am so very happy to help. Books mean a lot to me; they’re
part of my life! I also wish that every child has read at least ten books in their life. I’m honoured to make this happen.”
                         - Georgia Anjali Gopinath is 9 years old and lives in Canada

The money will go towards books for libraries in villages in Tamilnadu, run
by AID INDIA, an NGO. Since Tulika publishes in eight Indian languages,
our books reach children in various parts of the country and we are happy
to facilitate this.

 Quietly animated

Ready to battle the heat and the deadlines is Soumya Menon, who’s here for her internship.
A fourth-year student of animation film design from NID, Ahmedabad, she is quiet, warm and
friendly, and fits right in, having understood that her mother’s delicious chocolate cake is always
welcome (when she’s visiting)! Soumya has grown up with Tulika books and is always on the
lookout for them because she appreciates the pictures for the way in which they reflect Indian
storytelling and craft traditions – something she is trying to bring to her work. She loves to write,
doodle and travel to places off the tourist map.
